Cool As Ice (1991)

The 1991 film “Cool as Ice,” starring Vanilla Ice, was filmed in Southern California. Early in the film, Johnny Van Owen, played by Vanilla Ice, rides his motorcycle through town with his friends. One of his friend’s motorcycles breaks down in this area of Glendora.

LOCATION: Near 137 N Glendora Ave, Glendora, CA 91741

Johnny’s crew stumbles upon an eccentrically designed repair shop, where they repair his crew member’s motorcycle. There was quite a bit of production design added for the film, the real home is far more modest than what appears on screen.

LOCATION: 229 E Virginia Ave, Glendora, CA 91741

The home of Kathy, played by Kristin Minter, can also be found in Glendora, located just a few doors down from the repair shop house, as depicted in the film.

LOCATION: 546 N Wabash Ave, Glendora, CA 91741

LOCATION: 1122 Hyacinth Ave E, St Paul, MN 55106

Secretary (2002)

The 2002 Steven Shainberg film “Secretary” was shot in Southern California. The home of Lee Holloway, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, can be found in the Windsor Hills neighborhood. The same home appears in the film “Lords Of Dogtown.”

LOCATION: 4004 Kenway Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90008

E. Edward Grey, played by James Spader, works as an attorney in this building, where Lee Holloway becomes his secretary. The exterior scenes were filmed at the Huron Substation. The building was originally constructed for the purpose of converting electricity to power trolleys for the Yellow Car railway system, but was eventually sold off and operated as an event and filming venue. The same building appears in numerous films, including “The Fast And The Furious,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Date Night,” “Catwoman,” “Must Love Dogs” and “Malibu’s Most Wanted,” as well as the TV shows “NCIS: New Orleans,” “True Blood,” “Heroes,” “Dollhouse” and “Major Crimes.” It has also appeared in such music videos as Jonas Brothers – Kids of the Future and Josh Groban – February Song.

LOCATION: 2640 Huron St, Los Angeles, CA 90065

Lee goes to a photo shop and gets a picture of herself made for Mr. Grey. Formerly known as The Darkroom, the storefront is currently vacant with rumors of possible redevelopment. The same location also appeared in the film “The Big Picture” and can briefly be seen in “Falling Down.”

LOCATION: 5370 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Mr. Grey’s house can be found in the Sierra Vista neighborhood of East L.A.

LOCATION: 4333 Berkshire Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90032

What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993)

The 1993 Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It” was largely filmed in Los Angeles, California, with the locations sometimes doubling as other cities for the story. Ike and Tina, played by Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, eat dinner at the former Quality Cafe in Downtown Los Angeles.  The diner was a one-time staple of films, appearing in “Seven,” “Training Day,” “Ghost World,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Another Day In Paradise,” “(500) Days Of Summer” “Million Dollar Baby,” “The Rules Of Attraction,” “The Heartbreak Kid” and many more.  However, it was not an actual restaurant open to the public.  Instead it was used solely for filming (much like Johnie’s Coffee Shop in mid-town L.A.).  Unless the building was being set up for a production, most of the time it was closed up and locked by a large metal door covering the front windows.  So catching a glimpse of it was rare. It ceased to function as a filming location and was completely renovated in 2014. The interior of the property no longer bears any resemblance inside to how it appeared in so many films.

LOCATION: 1238 W 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90017 (since closed and remodeled)

Ike and Tina perform at New York’s Apollo Theater. The interior scenes were actually filmed at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, California. The same theater also appeared in many other films, including “Pearl Harbor,” “Zodiac,” “Babylon,” “Seabiscut,” “Remote Control,” “Win A Date With Tad Hamilton,” “It’s Pat: The Movie,” “Ghosts Of Mississippi,” “Boys And Girls,” “Live By Night,” “Worth Winning,” “Mark Of Love,” “Invasion Earth: The Aliens Are Here” and “From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks.” It has also appeared in such television series as “The O.C.,” “Party Of Five,” “Melrose Place,” “T.J.Hooker,” “7th Heaven” and “Cousin Skeeter.”

LOCATION: 478 W 6th St, San Pedro, CA 90731

Ike and Tina’s house can be found in View Park-Windsor Hills. It is the actual home Ike and Tina Turner once lived in, with the original furniture and decor once owned by the couple used for the film. The exterior has since been lined with gates and hedges, making it a bit difficult to see from ground level.

LOCATION: 4263 Olympiad Dr, View Park, CA 90043

Ike gets into a confrontation with Tina and her friend at the former Johnie’s Broiler in Downey.  The restaurant has a unique history, having appeared in many other films, such as “Heat,” “The Game,” “Short Cuts,” “License To Drive,” “My Stepmother Is An Alien,” “One Hour Photo” and many more.  In 2007, the building was demolished.  However, Bob’s Big Boy purchased the property years later and rebuilt it based on the original blueprints and even some of the same materials.  So what stands now closely resembles what was seen in the film.

The Amityville Horror

The real house where the Amityville murders took place in 1974 can be found in Amityville, New York. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six of his family members inside the home. He was convicted of the murders and died in custody in March 2021. In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz purchased the home, leaving less than a month later, claiming they experienced paranormal activity, although the truthfulness of their claim has been widely disputed. Their story was made into a book by Jay Anson in 1977 and began a series of film adaptations in 1979. The original address of the home was 112 Ocean Ave, but like many famous true crime homes, the address has since been changed, to 108 Ocean Ave. While the home has since been remodeled some, it still maintains many features of how it appeared in famous photographs from the 1970s.

LOCATION: Formerly 112 Ocean Ave, Amityville, NY 11701 (now defunct), changed to 108 Ocean Ave, Amityville, NY 11701

For the 1979 film “The Amityville Horror,” initial attempts to film in the real town of Amityville, New York proved unsuccessful, after the town denied permission to film any scenes there, in an ongoing effort to distance themselves from further infamy. Instead, a similar looking home in New Jersey was chosen. Today in Amityville, there are “no stopping or standing” signs throughout the neighborhood, which has a reputation for not always being hospitable to tourists.

If you do visit the home, be aware that any illegal parking is strictly enforced. The home is part of one of the most infamous American crime cases in modern history and remains a major attraction to true crime and paranormal enthusiasts. However, the town clearly prefers to distance itself from the notoriety, which should be kept in mind if you plan to visit.

Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers (1989)

The 1988 sequel “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers” was filmed in Utah. The Carruthers house, which also appeared in the previous installment, “Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers,” can be found in Salt Lake City.

LOCATION: 509 3rd Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84103

Over in the town of Midvale, you’ll find Vincent Drug, which served as the exterior of the drug store.  Vincent Drug has long since closed, but the signage and decor largely remain in tact.  The trees out front have grown considerably since filming took place, so it’s a bit difficult to see from across the street. The same location was also featured in “Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers,” “The Sandlot” and the Stephen King mini-series “The Stand.”

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

The 2004 Michel Gondry film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” shot around many parts of New York, from New York City to Mauntauk, at the far end of Long Island, with some additional filming in New Jersey. The beach house Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, break into can be found in Wainscott in Long Island. The home is part of the Georgica Association, a private enclave of upscale houses. There is limited street parking nearby, but it requires permit ID. As for the beach itself, the house is perched on a small stretch that is privately owned by the Georgica Association beginning at Beach Lane. If you stop by outside of peak times and keep your visit brief, in our experiences, the neighborhood residents were accommodating, but your experience could differ from ours.

LOCATION: 40 Association Rd, Wainscott, NY 11975 (GPS coordinates: 40°55’45.4″N, 72°14’00.2″W)

The house has also appeared in the film “The Nanny Diaries” as well as the music video for “Seasons Change” by Expose.

Later in the film, the house is seen collapsing as a visual representation of Joel’s memory being erased. This was of course a visual effect.

Clementine’s house was formerly located in Booklyn (59 Orient Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211), but has since been demolished.

Joel’s apartment can be found in Yonkers. He is seen walking along the sidewalk as Stan and Patrick, played by Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood, drive past.

LOCATION: 123 Valentine Ln, Yonkers, NY 10705

Joel is seen turning into his apartment driveway here.

As Stan and Patrick perform the memory wipe, we see into Joel’s memories of an argument he had with Clementie as she approaches this corner.

LOCATION: Saratoga Ave / Caryl Ave, Yonkers, NY 10705

Joel walks after Clementine past the Saratoga Market, but every time he reaches the end of the building, it looks the same as where he began, with Clementine now walking the opposite direction.

LOCATION: 208 Saratoga Ave, Yonkers, NY 10705

Here is the other side of the building.

Here is a panoramic view of the full building where Joel walks back and forth, always ending up where he began, with the store signage going blank as his memories continue to be erased.

Midway through his memories of Clementine being erased, Joel decides he no longer wants to proceed and begins trying to hide her in unrelated memories from his life, in the hopes that he can prevent losing her altogether. They are seen running through New York City’s famed Grand Central Terminal, with people around them disappearing as Joel’s memories are zapped. The two run down these stairs. Grand Central Terminal has been seen in countless films, such as “Midnight Run,” “North By Northwest,” “Carlito’s Way,” “Seconds,” “The Fisher King,” “The Avengers,” “The Ice Storm,” “Unfaithful,” “Hackers,” “The French Connection,” “Armageddon,” “Revolutionary Road,” “Megalopolis” and many more.

LOCATION: 89 E 42nd St, New York, NY 10017

Joel’s childhood home could be found in Bayonne, New Jersey (105 E 23rd St, Bayonne, NJ 07002), but it has since been demolished.
