Past Lives (2023)

The 2023 Celine Song film “Past Lives” was shot in Korea and New York City. Early in the film, Nora and Hae Sung are seen playing together as children at MMCA Outdoor Sculpture Park, located just outside of Seoul, Korea, near Seoul Land amusement park. Their mothers are seen sitting at this bench as the children play. The sculpture next to the bench is known as Visual Point-Opener by Kwon Dal-Sool from 1984.

The sculpture the children play in front of is known as Singing Man by Jonathan Borofsky from 1994. The jaw only moves at select times of the day and was shut down for the season during our visit, but you can still see it behind the scaffolding in the image below. This area is not difficult to find, if you approach MMCA Outdoor Sculpture Park from the main entrance, you’ll see it immediately to your right. We’ve also provided GPS coordinates.

The kids are next seen playing on the New Gazing at Being sculpture by Lee Il-Ho from 1994. This one is slightly more tricky to find. If you follow the path above and behind the bench where the mothers sit, past the main pedestrian entrance and towards the eastern parking lot, you’ll find it. We’ve also included GPS coordinates.

The stairs where young Nora and Hae Sung go their separate ways is a bit of a walk from any nearby train or bus stations. Depending which direction you approach, you may need to walk down several narrow roads to reach it, with the stairs located on a hill. We’ve provided GPS coordinates below.

Nora and Hae Sung are seen walking on another set of stairs on their way home from school. These stairs are not located near the above location. It is located up a long stretch of hills. If you plan to visit, we’d recommend a taxi to reach this spot, unless you’re looking for a bit of a hike.

After Nora moves to New York City, she eventually reconnects with Hae Sung, who comes to visit her after many years. The two visit the Statue of Liberty, which has of course been seen in countless films, such as “Splash,” “The Godfather Part II,” “Superman,” “Escape from New York,” “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York,” “Ghostbusters II,” “X-Men,” “Comrades: Almost a Love Story,” “Baby It’s You,” “The Abyss,” “Lords Of Dogtown” and more.

Nora’s apartment can be found at 50 E 1st St, New York, NY 10003, while the garage they stand in front of at the end of the film is located just a few buildings down at 40 E 1st St, New York, NY 10003.

Bringing Down The House (2003)

The 2003 comedy “Bringing Down the House” was filmed in Southern California. The home of Peter Sanderson, played by Steve Martin, can be found in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The home of Kate Sanderson, played by Jean Smart can be found in South Pasadena.  The same house can be seen in the film “Jurassic Park III” as well as the TV shows “Family” and “Fatal Attraction.”

Rose Red (2002)

The mansion from the 2002 Stephen King miniseries “Rose Red” was filmed at Thornewood Castle in Lakewood, Washington. Completed in 1911, the property is located within a private, gated community. However, the estate currently serves as an event space and bed and breakfast. The prequel film “The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer” also shot at the property, as well as the films “There Will Be Blood” and “The Eyes of the Totem.”

The Gift (2015)

The 2015 film “The Gift,” starring Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall and Joel Edgerton, was shot in Southern California. The home of Simon and Robyn Callem, played by Bateman and Hall, can be found in Sherman Oaks.

Home Alone 3 (1997)

The largely forgotten 1997 sequel “Home Alone 3” was filmed, much like the original movie, in the suburbs north of Chicago. The Pruitt family house can be found in Evanston, Illinois.

The Hidden (1987)

The 1987 sci-fi detective film “The Hidden” was shot around Los Angeles, California. The opening bank robbery scene was filmed in Downtown L.A. at the Citigroup Center.  This same location has appeared in countless films, such as “Heat,” “Fight Club,” “To Live And Die In L.A.” and more.

The chase continues past the Uptown Rocker public art piece in Downtown L.A., which has also appeared in such films as “Southland Tales” and “Double Dragon.”

The chase proceeds to Grand Lower.  This is a popular area for both filming and photography.  It has been featured in countless films, including “The Terminator,” “Robocop,” “Demolition Man,” “Cobra,” “Batman Forever,” “Repo Man,” “Double Dragon,” “Whore” and many more.  It was also featured in the TV series “Westworld.”

The car reaches this parking garage area. This building has also appeared in “Kill Bill,” “The Neon Demon” and more.

Senator Holt is targeted at the MacArthur, formerly known as the Park Plaza Hotel. No longer a functioning hotel, the MacArthur today serves primarily as a property for hosting filming and special events.  However, it is under renovation with apparent plans to open a portion up once again as a hotel. It has been featured in many films, such as “Wild At Heart,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Drive,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Bobby,” “Gangster Squad,” “Tango & Cash,” “The Naked Gun” and many more.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

While the 1999 Stanley Kubrick film “Eyes Wide Shut” takes place in New York City, most of the film was shot in England. There are, however, several quick exterior establishing shots that were filmed in New York, such as the home of Dr. William Harford and Alice Harford, played by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

The Harfords attend a party at the home of Victor Ziegler, played by Sydney Pollack.

The mansion where the orgy takes place was a composite of three locations. The exterior was filmed at Mentmore Towers, Mentmore, Leighton Buzzard LU7 0QH, UK, which has also appeared in the films “Batman Begins” and “Brazil.” The interiors were filmed at the privately owned Elveden Hall, 9MPH+3V, Thetford IP24 3TA, UK, which has also appeared in such films as “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” “Stardust,” “Jupiter Ascending” and “The Living Daylights.” The front gate was a set built and filmed on the grounds of the Transport Research Laboratory, Crowthorne House, Nine Mile Ride, Crowthorne, Wokingham RG40 3GA, UK (GPS coordinates: 51°22’55.5″N, 0°46’38.8″W).

Late in the film, Dr. Harford goes to the hospital to check on Mandy.

The Nice Guys (2016)

The 2016 Shane Black film “The Nice Guys,” starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, takes place in Los Angeles in 1977. Much of the filming took place in Southern California, with some additional filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The opening shot is seen behind the Hollywood sign.  There is a public hiking trail that goes up to and behind the sign.  The sign itself is heavily monitored by security.

The Hollywood First National Bank Building is briefly seen as a radio announcer repeats a smog advisory. The same building also appears in the film “Twins“, as well as briefly in the background of a rooftop scene in “Reservoir Dogs.”

The Dreamers (2003)

The 2003 Bernardo Bertolucci film “The Dreamers” was shot in Paris, France. In the opening scene of the film, Matthew, played by Michael Pitt, is seen approaching a movie theater, which was filmed at the Palais de Chaillot. Bertolucci previously filmed at this same location, only from the reverse angle, in “The Conformist.”

The bridge he is seen approaching on, Pont d’Iéna, connects between the Eiffel Tower and Palais de Chaillot, making it an extremely popular and crowded tourist destination.

The area where the protest is staged and Matthew meets Isabelle and Theo, played by Eva Green and Louis Garrel, was blocked off and inaccessible at the time of our visit.

Uncle Buck (1989)

The 1989 John Hughes comedy “Uncle Buck,” like most Hughes’ films, was shot around the Chicago suburbs. In the film, Uncle Buck, played by John Candy, comes to babysit the kids at the Russell residence, which can be found in Evanston, where the director also filmed scenes for “Sixteen Candles” and “She’s Having A Baby.”
