Pearl Harbor (2001)

The 2001 Michael Bay film “Pearl Harbor” was primarily filmed in Hawaii, Southern California and England. In the film, Rafe McCawley, played by Ben Affleck, is accompanied by Danny Walker, played by Josh Hartnett, as he departs a train station to join the front lines of the war in England. These scenes were filmed at Union Station, a train station in Downtown Los Angeles.  It has been featured in many films, such as “Blade Runner” “Catch Me If You Can,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Species,” “To Live And Die In L.A.,” “Bugsy,” “Nick of Time,” “The Replacement Killers,” “Mike’s Murder,” “The Way We Were,” “Union Station,” “Under the Rainbow” and more.

The scenes where Doolittle, played by Alec Baldwin, prepares his pilots to fly short takeoffs were filmed at the north hangar of the Marine Corps Air Station Tustin (72-7 Tustin Ranch Rd, Irvine, CA 92606). There are two hangers located at the air station, which closed back in 1999 and has since been used in many productions, such as the 2009 version of “Star Trek,” “The Hindenburg,” “The Man’s Navy” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.” It also appeared in Michael Jackson’s music video for “Hold My Hand,” as well as countless commercials. In 2023, a fire destroyed the north hanger. However, the south hanger, which has been seen in such TV shows as “The X-Files” and “From the Earth to the Moon,” was unaffected by the fire and remains standing.

Evelyn Johnson, played by Kate Beckinsale, leaves a movie theater after she is upset by one of the newsreels. This scene was filmed at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, California. The same theater also appeared in many other films, including “Zodiac,” “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Babylon,” “Seabiscut,” “Remote Control,” “Win A Date With Tad Hamilton,” “It’s Pat: The Movie,” “Ghosts Of Mississippi,” “Boys And Girls,” “Live By Night,” “Worth Winning,” “Mark Of Love,” “Invasion Earth: The Aliens Are Here” and “From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks.” It has also appeared in such television series as “The O.C.,” “Party Of Five,” “Melrose Place,” “T.J.Hooker,” “7th Heaven” and “Cousin Skeeter.”

Japanese planes are seen approaching Hawaii near Kualoa Regional Park, with a small island known as Mokolii seen on the right. It is a popular photo spot for tourists and very close to the house from “50 First Dates.”

A man is seen riding a motorcycle towards a bunker, where the planes are first detected by American radar. This scene was filmed at Kualoa Ranch in O’ahu. The ranch offers tours and this area can be seen on their film tour. Inside are many props and displays showcasing the many filmed shot at the ranch over the years.

The Japanese planes are also seen passing this area, which is also part of Kualoa Ranch. Kualoa Ranch has been featured in dozens of films, such as “Jurassic Park,” “Jurassic World,” “Triple Frontier” and many more, as well as the television show “Lost.”

Notting Hill (1999)

The 1999 romantic comedy “Notting Hill,” starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, was filmed in London, with many scenes of course taking place in the titular neighborhood on the city’s west side. The book store owned by William Thacker (Grant) is one of the most popular filming locations in all of England. Already a popular neighborhood for tourists, there was a crowded street market also taking place on the day of our visit, with many obstructions, which made it a challenge getting clear angles of the store.

While the store was based on a real book store, it was located at a different location in the same neighborhood (13-15 Blenheim Cres, London W11 2EE, UK), which has long since closed. At the time of filming, the storefront featured in the film was actually an antique shop, but has since become a general souvenir and gift shop, re-named to mirror the film’s store name.

The flat of William Thacker, which he shares with Spike, played by Rhys Ifans, is located just a couple blocks away from the book store location. The famous blue door where Spike answers in his underwear is also quite a popular tourist destination. It was likewise a challenge getting a photograph here without continuous crowds approaching to get their own shots.

Starship Troopers (1997)

In the 1997 Paul Verhoeven film “Starship Troopers,” the characters attend school at the Buenos Aires Education Center. These scenes were actually filmed at a medical center in Baldwin Park, California.  A different area of the same facility was seen in the movie “Face/Off.”

The soldiers set up base camp at Vasquez Rocks.  One of the most popular filming locations in all of California, the iconic rocks have appeared in such films as “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” “The Flintstones,” “Dante’s Peak,” “Jingle All The Way,” “Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Paul” and dozens more.  Television shows which featured Vasquez Rocks in episodes include “The Fugutive,” “The A-Team,” “MacGuyver” and perhaps most famous of all, the original “Star Trek” series, where the rocks were seen in numerous episodes, serving as multiple different planets. The rocks have also been seen in music videos for Michael Jackson, 311 and many more, as well as countless commercials.

Everybody Loves Raymond

The house from the TV sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which ran from 1996 to 2005, can be found in the town of Merrick, located in Long Island, New York. This is the home of Raymond and Debra, played by Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton.

Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020)

The 2020 sequel “Bill & Ted Face the Music” was filmed around New Orleans, Louisiana. The home of Ted, played by Keanu Reeves, can be found in the town of Slidell, just north of New Orleans.

Bill and Ted receive couples therapy with their wives at this building, which is actually a television station.

Older versions of Bill and Ted’s wives are seen arriving in a telephone booth time machine here, which is a reverse view in the parking lot of the same location.

Bill and Ted’s daughters, Billie and Thea, travel back in time with Jimi Hendrix and Louis Armstrong to Vienna in 1782. These scenes were also filmed in New Orleans.

Jimi Hendrix plays his guitar outside of Galler Hall, which also appears in such films as “JFK,” “Interview with the Vampire,” “Miller’s Crossing,” and “Runaway Jury,” as well as the TV show “NCIS: New Orleans.”

Amélie (2001)

The 2001 Jean-Pierre Jeunet film “Amélie” (a.k.a. “Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain”) was primarily shot in Paris, France, with some interiors filmed on sets in Cologne, Germany. Early in the film, Amélie’s mother is tragically killed by a suicide jumper who leaps from the Notre-Dame, landing on her mother below. The famed cathedral has appeared in countless films, such as “Midnight in Paris,” “Once A Thief,” “The Man in the Iron Mask,” “National Lampoon’s European Vacation,” “Charade” and many more.

Much of the exteriors were filmed around the Montmartre area of Paris, including the cafe where Amélie, played by Audrey Tautou, works. It is a real cafe, known as Café des Deux Moulins, which is still in business today.

The door on the left, just around the corner of the same building is the entrance to Amélie’s apartment. You can also see several posters for the film on the side of the building. If you’re in the area, the stairs from the opening of the film “Ronin” are about a block away.

Nino Quincampoix, played by Mathieu Kassovitz, gets a call on a pay phone from Amélie with The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre (The Sacred Heart of Montmartre) seen behind them. The church is a major tourist attraction overlooking the neighborhood. It also appears in the films “Ronin” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.”

Jerry Maguire (1996)

The 1996 Cameron Crowe film “Jerry Maguire,” starring Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger, was filmed in Southern California. The condo where Jerry, played by Cruise, lives can be found in Marina Del Rey. It is only seen from interior views in the film.

The home of Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr., is a bit of a drive outside of L.A. to Westlake Village.

The home of Dorothy, played by Zellweger, can be found in Manhattan Beach up a very steep and narrow hillside. It must have been a challenge getting movie trucks into this space.

Jerry and Dorothy go on a date at a mexican restaurant, which still exists today near Playa Vista. It is only seen from interior views in the film.

White Noise (2022)

The 2022 Noah Baumbach film “White Noise” was primarily shot in Northeast Ohio. In the film, the Gladney family lives at this home, which can be found in Oberlin, near Oberlin College.

The fictional A&P Food Store, which appears multiple times in the film, was shot at the Meadowbrook Market Square in Bedford. The building is currently vacant.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)

The 1987 John Hughes film “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” filmed scenes in Illinois, New York and Missouri. The home of Neal Page, played by Steve Martin, can be found in Kenilworth, about 30 minutes north of Chicago.

Late in the film, Neal and Del Griffith, played by John Candy, can be seen walking together in the reverse view, down Warwick Road, as they approach the house.

After being pulled over by a cop, Neal and Dell’s car is seen being towed in from of the Old Courthouse Arts Center in the town of Woodstock. The same location appears in the film “Groundhog Day.”
