The Irishman (2019)

The 2019 Martin Scorsese film “The Irishman” was mostly shot north of New York City, in small towns such as White Plains, Suffern and Hempstead, with a bit of additional filming in New Jersey and Florida. While noted for using de-aging effects on the actors, the film likewise utilized visual effects on several of the locations to make them more period authentic. Sometimes what you see in real life does not immediately match what appears on screen. However, the filmmakers used every tool at their disposal, combining a unique mixture of visual effects, practical set dressing and in some cases, simply finding great locations that didn’t need anything changed to bring about the appropriate look. The production reportedly traveled to over 200 different locations in the film, so we obviously weren’t able visit every spot, but we did as many as we could.

Frank Sheeran, played by Robert De Niro, lives at this home, located in White Plains.

LOCATION: 63 Lincoln Ave, White Plains, NY 10606

After his truck has some mechanical issues, Frank first meets Russell, played by Joe Pesci, at the Texaco gas station, with a Stuckey’s dessert restaurant on the right. The real location is not a gas station at all, rather it is part of Great Hunger Memorial Park, just off the Saw Mill River Pkwy. The gas pumps were added by the production, as well as some set dressing to bring the buildings back to life, but the area is still instantly recognizable from the film. It’s pretty easy to access and open to the public, so we highly recommend visiting the park.

Frank works his way up the criminal ranks, meeting Skinny Razor at the Friendly Lounge. Again, the building was repurposed to appear a bit older for the film, but is still recognizable. Several other locations from the film were shot in this same area, including the church in the background.

The baptism scene was shot inside of this church. The exterior of the church appears in a couple scenes as well, but always in the background.

Russell collects money and runs some of his operations at Penn Drape & Curtains. This was filmed in the town of Suffern and once again, a couple other locations from the film are on the same street.

After Anastasia is killed in a barber shop, Russell is seen exiting Penn Drape & Curtains to talk to a man parked out front and calm things down.

After a man fails to pay up on a debt owed to Skinny Razor, Frank forces the man into his car in front of this building. This is again located just around the corner from the Friendly Lounge location in Queens, with the same church appearing in the background.

Still in the same area, directly across the street from the Friendly Lounge location, is the store where Frank beats the owner on the sidewalk for shoving his daughter. Quite a bit of set decoration was added for this scene, making the storefront look much different in the film.

Whispers offers Frank a side job at “Philadelphia’s Melrose Diner,” which is actually the former Goodfellas Diner in Maspeth. The diner was famous for its appearance in another Scorsese film, “Goodfellas,” changing it’s name from the Maspeth Diner after the success of that film. However, it got damaged by a fire in 2018. Since then, the building has remained closed down and appears in disrepair these days. Only the exterior was revisited for this film, the interiors for the scene were filmed at 106 E 2nd St, Mineola, NY 11501.

Back in Suffern, Frank makes the rounds to collect more money for Russell at Fair Furriers. This is located very close to the Penn Drape & Curtains location.

Frank begins spending a lot of time working with Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino. Hoffa eats with Frank’s family at this ice cream stand. It really is called Weir’s and very little of it was altered for the film. The spot is a bit of a distance away from most of the other locations, however, in Salisbury Mills.

Hoffa is once again enjoying ice cream with Frank when they learn of J.F.K.’s assassination on a television inside.

Hoffa’s teamsters headquarters was actually the Hempstead Town Hall.

Hoffa gets sentenced to prison, with the exterior scenes filmed at the East Jersey State Prison. A real prison, the location has appeared in numerous films, including “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Malcolm X,” “Rounders,” “He Got Game,” “The Hurricane” and more.

Umbertos Clam House, where Frank performs a hit in front of shocked onlookers, made heavy use of CGI to modify the ground level, incorporating what was a set into the interior views of location. The exterior can be found at 90 Orchard St, New York, NY 10002.

After the hit, Russell is seen at a payphone, making a call to an unknown person in front of the Sunoco gas station. Quite a bit of set dressing was added to make it look like vintage gas station. The real building is part of a bagel shop. The business owns a couple buildings side by side. The one used in the film sits off to the left, near the intersection of Park Ave / Orange Turnpike. The building is currently vacant, although the main building to the right is still operational.

Frank buys hot dogs for Jimmy at Lum’s, supposedly located in Florida. The scene was actually filmed in Tuxedo Park, New York, just a short distance away from the above Sunoco location. Visual effects were used to erase the mountain and trees in the background, substituting them for palm trees. The building has also since been remodeled, making it even more tricky to match up.

Hoffa is killed inside of this house, supposedly located in Michigan. The house seen in the film is actually located in White Plains, New York.

Suburbicon (2017)

The 2017 George Clooney film “Sububicon,” starring Matt Damon and Julianne Moore, was filmed in Southern California. In the opening scenes, a book is shown depicting the formation of the Suburbicon community. The Suburbicon Shopping Mall is part of the Valley Plaza in North Hollywood, which has been featured in countless productions, such as “Captain Marvel” and “Too Old To Die Young.” The actual building has long been vacant.

The Mayers familys family moves into this home in Fullerton, which causes a stir with the racist neighbors in 1950s suburbia.

Gardner and Rose Lodge, played by Damon and Moore, live in this home, which is supposedly located back to back with the above home, but can actually be found over in Carson.

The bus station is back at the Valley Plaza in North Hollywood.

Clerks (1994)

The 1994 independent classic “Clerks,” which famously launched the film career of Kevin Smith, was shot near his hometown of Highlands, New Jersey. The story of “Clerks” is well documented, with Smith financing it via personal credit cards and eventually being accepting into the Sundance Film Festival, ultimately landing national distribution. As you might imagine for a film with such humble beginnings, the locations are all within a short distance of one another.

At the beginning of the film, Dante, played by Brian O’Halloran, is called into work on his day off to cover another employee’s shift. Here is the home of Dante, which still mostly resembles how it appeared in the film.

LOCATION: 102 W Washington Ave, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716

The most iconic location is of course the Quick Stop Groceries, where most of the film takes place. At the time of filming, Smith worked at the store and the owners allowed him to film at night, while the business was closed. The store is quite a popular destination, attracting fans on a daily basis. The staff is quite welcoming to fans and allow you to take as many pictures as you’d like, both inside and outside of the store, so we highly recommend a visit.

With the expansion of Smith’s “View Askewniverse,” in which characters from multiple films existed within the same cinematic universe, Quick Stop Groceries would appear in many more Smith films over the years, including “Mallrats” (extended cut only), “Chasing Amy,” “Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back” and of course the sequels “Clerks II” and “Clerks III.”

Here is the main checkout counter, where Dante spends much of the film. Overall, the interior hasn’t changed much since filming took place.

Randall, played by Jeff Anderson, makes his famous entrance here.

The back of the store appears in multiple scenes, such as the man picking through the eggs, the woman (played by Smith’s mother) checking all the expiration dates on the milk and Caitlin Bree having sex in the bathroom.

Randall works at the RST Video, which is located right next door to the Quick Stop. This is also where Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, hang out for most of the film. The interior of this area is not open to the public at this time.

After Dante learns one of his exes has died, he and Randall attend the wake at this funeral home.

Freeway (1996)

The 1996 dark comedy thriller “Freeway,” starring Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland, was shot in Southern California. In the film, Vanessa Lutz, played by Witherspoon, lives at this motel with her mother, Ramona (Amanda Plummer) and stepfather, Larry (Michael T. Weiss).

LOCATION: 13035 San Fernando Rd, Sylmar, CA 91342

Vanessa is depicted as living in the left unit of this building at the back of the property.

After Vanessa’s mother is arrested in a prostitution sting, a social worker attempts to take her away. Vanessa instead handcuffs the worker to a bed and escapes. The location is not in the safest of areas, so we recommend using caution if you visit in person.

After Vanessa’s car breaks down on the freeway, she is picked up by Bob Wolverton, played by Sutherland. Later, Bob and Vanessa walk at night at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro. They stop next to the Point Fermin Lighthouse, where Vanessa discusses her past trauma. The same lighthouse can be seen in the film “(500) Days Of Summer,” as well as the TV shows “MacGyver” and “Amazing Stories.” It is also located near the Korean Bell of Friendship from “The Usual Suspects.”

Airborne (1993)

The 1990s skating classic “Airborne” was primarily filmed around Cincinnati, Ohio and just across the Ohio River into Kentucky, with a few additional scenes filmed in Southern California. In the film, Mitchell Goosen, played by Shane McDermott, uproots from his Southern California home to Cincinnati to stay with his cousin’s family, while his parents work abroad. His cousin is Wiley, played by a young Seth Green. Wiley’s home can be found in the town of Newport, Kentucky, which is just a short distance away from Cincinnati over the state border.

LOCATION: 711 Linden Ave, Newport, KY 41071

Wiley’s house is mostly seen in brief glimpses from a side angle, but here is a full view of the home.

Mitchell begins attending school at Western Hills University High School, where he struggles to fit in with the other boys, but catches the interest of a girl named Nikki, played by Brittney Powell.

LOCATION: 2144 Ferguson Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45238

Mitchell ends up taking Nikki on a date to the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati. Mitchell skates around inside the conservatory, which hasn’t changed all that much since filming took place. The property does charge an admission fee, but is open to the public.

Mitchell and Nikki end up on another date along the riverfront of the Ohio River, with the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and Cincinnati skyline in the background. This area is known as Covington Plaza, but it has been remodeled a bit and the area where the characters stand in the film was actually off to the left of Covington Plaza. The same location appears in the film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”

Mitchell and Wiley go on a double date at this restaurant in Newport, Kentucky, where Nikki’s brother Jack, played by Chris Conrad, spoils their evening. Outside, Mitchell and Wiley get into an argument. Inside, there is a sign for the film, featuring autographs from the cast and crew, but it was closed at the time of our visit. The same restaurant was famously featured in the film “Rain Man.”

The parking lot hockey game, where Mitchell finally wins over his classmates, was filmed at the Longworth Hall Parking Lot in Cincinnati.

This climax of the film is when Mitchell’s classmates are challenged by a rival crew to an inline skating race down what is known as “Devils Backbone.” While there is a real Devils Backbone Rd in Cincinnati, the version seen in the film is a composite of multiple roads scattered around Cincinnati and Kentucky. The race first begins on the street in front of 7012 Springdale Rd Cincinnati, OH 45247 and continues past this intersection.

They continue past this building.

As the race winds down, the skaters make their way into the city.

Mitchell jumps his way down these stairs on the other side of the overpass.

After passing through the former Riverfront Stadium (201 East Pete Rose Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202), which has since been demolished, the race finally ends at the intersection of Broadway / Ohio River Scenic Byway, Cincinnati, OH 45203.

Tales From The Hood (1995)

The Simms Funeral Home from the 1995 horror anthology from “Tales From the Hood” can be found in the historic Angelino Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.

LOCATION: 1345 Kellam Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90026

Duke Metger, played by Corbin Bernsen, plays a racist running for governor. Duke’s home was filmed at the Banning House in Wilmington, California. Built in 1863, the property was also seen in the 1992 Danny Aiello film “Ruby,” as well as 1998’s “Primary Colors” and the TV shows “Quantum Leap” and “Bronk.” The house currently operates as a museum and is open the the public.

Jingle All The Way (1996)

The 1996 holiday comedy “Jingle All the Way,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was primarily filmed around Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, with a few additional scenes filmed around Southern California.

The opening “Turbo Man” sequence takes place at Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce, California. Countless films have also shot scenes at Vasquez Rocks, including “The Flintstones,” “Dante’s Peak,” “Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Starship Troopers,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Paul,” “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey,” “Hell Comes to Frogtown” and dozens more. Television shows which featured Vasquez Rocks in episodes include “The Fugutive,” “The A-Team,” “MacGuyver” and perhaps most famous of all, the original “Star Trek” series, where the rocks were seen in numerous episodes, serving as multiple different planets. The rocks are part of a Natural Area Park and open to the public from sunrise to sunset.

Howard Langston, played by Schwarzenegger, lives with his family at this home, located near Edina, Minnesota.

After running out of gas, Howard pushes his car to Mickey’s Dining Car. Only the exterior was used in the film, the interior scenes were built on a set. The same diner has been seen in the films “The Mighty Ducks,” “D2: The Mighty Ducks,” “D3: The Mighty Ducks” and “A Prairie Home Companion.” At this time, the diner is closed indefinitely, but it is rumored to potentially reopen sometime in 2022.

The Vanishing (1993)

The 1993 American remake of the French-Dutch film, “The Vanishing,” starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Nancy Travis, was filmed in around Washington and Southern California. In the film, Jeff Harriman, played by Sutherland, lives with his girlfriend Rita, played by Travis, at this apartment complex, located in Seattle.

LOCATION: 200 Aloha St, Seattle, WA 98109

The unit where the characters live in the film is apartment 20.

The property still generally looks the same as it did in the film.

The Gambler (2014)

In the 2014 film “The Gambler,” Jim Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg, lives in this home, located in Benedict Canyon, Los Angeles. The house is slightly tricky to find. N Beverly Glen Blvd is a very busy street and there’s no immediate spot to turn once you reach the house. Instead, you actually turn near 795 N Beverly Glen Blvd, which looks like a private driveway, but actually has a path that leads up to several other homes, including this one. There’s also a foot path that leads up. The other homes tucked away in this little area are also very interesting.

Jersey Girl (2004)

The 2004 Kevin Smith film “Jersey Girl,” starring Ben Affleck, was primarily filmed in Paulsboro, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York City, New York. The majority of the film’s exteriors were filmed in Paulsboro, while many of the interiors were shot across the Delaware River in Philadelphia.

Ben Affleck plays Ollie Trinké, a successful publicist in New York City. Ollie brings his new love Gertrude, played by Jennifer Lopez, to meet his father Bart, played by George Carlin. Later Ollie moves into the home with their daughter Gertie, played by Raquel Castro. Arguably the central location of the film, Bart’s home is located in Paulsboro. The house beside it has since been demolished, but thankfully the Trinké house remains mostly unchanged. Most of the house interiors were sets built in Philadelphia.

Bart frequents the Clamdigger Bar and drinks with his buddies. Ollie and Gertrude dance together inside the bar in one scene.

LOCATION: 30 E Monroe St, Paulsboro, NJ 08066

Ollie’s New York City apartment seen early in the film overlooks Central Park in New York City. Later Ollie brings his daughter to the city and points out the apartment to her.

LOCATION: 785 5th Ave, New York, NY 10022

Smith did shoot a bit of material around his frequent stomping grounds. The scene where Bart tells Ollie he can’t watch the baby because he’s busy driving a street sweeper was filmed at the corner of Highland Ave / S Bay Ave, Highlands, NJ 07732. This is just a couple blocks away from Smith’s real childhood home, which also served as a filming location for Randall’s house in “Clerks II.”

The Hard Rock Cafe, where Ollie loses his temper at a room full of press, was a composite of two locations. The exterior was the former Hard Rock on W 57th St in New York, which has long since closed and been completely remodeled. The interiors were filmed at the Hard Rock in Philadelphia (1113 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19107).

The exterior of Gertie’s school is Loudenslager Elementary School in Paulsboro.

Many of the school interiors, including Gertie’s “Sweeney Todd” performance, were filmed at Paulsboro High School.

Mub & Renee’s Video Blast is the video store where Maya, played by Liv Tyler, works. This was built in a shopping plaza on W Broad St in Paulsboro, which was empty at the time of filming.

Here’s a closer look at where the video store would have been. It has obviously changed a bit since filming, as the space was incorporated into the store next to it.

Ollie takes Gertie into New York City to see a Broadway performance of Sweeney Todd. Afterwards, the two talk at Gapstow Bridge in Central Park, where Gertie asks questions about her mom. Gapstow Bridge was also featured in “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York.”

Ollie has lunch with Maya at the Berlin Diner in Berlin, New Jersey. This location is about a 30 minute drive from Paulsboro, so it’s a bit out of the way if you’re visiting the filming locations, but still looks nearly identical to how it appeared in the film.

After their lunch, Maya talks to Ollie on the ramp out front. She takes pity and offers to have sex with him.

We leave you with a couple locations that didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. We’ve included them in case the long-promised extended version of the film ever sees the light of day.

Ollie and Gertrude’s wedding was shot at this church.

Another scene filmed when Gertrude visits Ollie’s hometown was the two characters having a romantic moment beneath the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse.
