The Middle

The house from the TV sitcom “The Middle,” which ran from 2009 to 2018, could be found at the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California. The ranch was a small lot located apart from the main studio lot, which was not open to public tours. The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

The Curse Of La Llorona (2019)

The 2019 horror film “The Curse of la Llorona” is a spin-off set in the “Conjuring” universe, starring Linda Cardellini and Raymond Cruz. The story takes place in 1973 in Los Angeles, with production likewise taking place in Southern California. The house where Anna, played by Cardellini, lives with her children is actually a composite of a couple different locations. The front of the home can be found in the Harvard Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The back of the home was a set located at the Warner Bros Ranch in Burbank.  The pool had been featured in many productions, most notably “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The home facade itself had likewise been featured in numerous productions, including “Small Soldiers,” “Pleasantville,” the TV series “Pushing Daisies” and more. The ranch was demolished in 2023 to make way for new soundstages and these sets no longer exist.

In one scene, Anna’s daughter Samantha, played by Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, hears crying from her back yard. She looks through the fence across the street, where more homes from the Warner Bros. Ranch can be seen, albeit from a partially obstructed perspective. First she sees part of the Griswold house from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The same house can also be seen in “American Beauty,” “WandaVision,” “Hocus Pocus” and more. It has also since been demolished.

The church seen in the film is the St. Brendan Catholic Church, which has appeared in numerous productions, including “Fight Club,” “Spider-Man 3,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors,” “Armageddon” and the Guns N’ Roses music video for “November Rain.” The same church also appears in another film in “The Conjuring Universe,” “Annabelle.”

WandaVision

The Marvel TV miniseries “WandaVision” is set in the town of Westview, New Jersey. The show was filmed between Atlanta, Georgia and Los Angeles, California at locations including Pinewood Atlanta Studios, Warner Bros. Ranch and Disney Golden Oak Ranch. Wanda and Vision, played by Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, live at this home, which was located on Blondie Street at Warner Bros. Ranch. The house was not a real home, rather a facade. The producers sought out an artificial look for the neighborhood, in favor of using real locations. The home was most famous for being the Griswold house in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” but also appeared in such films as “American Beauty,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Small Soldiers,” “Pleasantville” and more.

In the first episode, the house is depicted as a single story home in the 1950s. By episode 2, the period has jumped ahead to the 1960s and the home has become a two story house. Warner Bros. Ranch was located separate from the main Warner Bros. Studio lot and was not open to public tours. The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

Dottie, played by Emma Caulfield Ford, lives at this house, which was also located on Warner Bros. Ranch. The house was best known for appearing in “Lethal Weapon,” but also appeared in many other productions, such as “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “American Beauty“, The Three Stooges serials, “Pushing Daisies,” “The Middle” and many more. It too has since been demolished.

Dottie has a party at a pool in her back yard. This was the same pool at Warner Bros. Ranch where Clark fantasizes about the department store woman in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”  While it was located fairly close to Wanda and Dottie’s houses, it was actually on the opposite side of the street.  If not for the trees in the background of the photo below, you could see Wanda and Vision’s house in the distance. This set has likewise since been demolished.

Dennis The Menace

The TV series “Dennis the Menace,” which ran from 1959 to 1963, was set in a fictional neighborhood located at the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California. The Warner Ranch lot was separate from the main Warner backlot and was not open to public tours. The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

The Mitchell house was the original home exterior featured on the show, although it had some remodeling. It was one of the few original sets on the ranch, having survived previous fires on the grounds. It has since been demolished.

The Wilson house was located next door, but the original set was lost in a fire in 1970. It was eventually rebuilt and this was how the facade appeared up to the time of demolition.

The Elkins house was likewise burned in the 1970 fire and rebuilt. Here is how it appears prior to demolition. The same facade was used in the 1970s TV series “The Partridge Family” and the film “The Monster Squad.”

Gremlins (1984)

The 1984 film “Gremlins” was shot mostly at Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California.  In the opening of the film, set in Chinatown, Mr. Peltzer emerges from this alley.  This was filmed on the Warner Bros. Studios Lot.

The house of Mrs. Deagle can also be found on the main Warner lot.  The house was also seen in the TV series “Growing Pains” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” as well as the 80s films “The Monster Squad” and “Deadly Friend.”

Small Soldiers (1998)

In the 1998 Joe Dante film “Small Soldiers,” Alan’s house was not actually a real house, rather a set constructed on the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California.  The set was built specifically for the film, but remained standing until 2023 and had been used for other productions, including “Pleasantville,” “The Curse Of La Llorona” and the TV series “Pushing Daisies.” The ranch was demolished in 2023 to make way for new sound stages and this set no longer exists there.

Another set from the film, The Inner Child toy store, is located over on the main studio lot of Warner Bros. and can in fact be seen on their studio tour.  The building was famously later used as the coffee shop where Emma Stone works in “La La Land.”

Some of the establishing shots of the town were filmed at Orange Circle.  A popular filming spot, Orange Circle has also been featured in such films as “That Thing You Do!,” “Big Momma’s House,” “Frailty” and many more.

The Partridge Family

The house from the 1970s sitcom “The Partridge Family” could be found on the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank. This studio lot was separate from the main Warner backlot and not open to public tours.  The house had since changed a bit in appearance, due to being used for an explosion during the filming of “Lethal Weapon.”  The same house can be seen in “The Monster Squad.” The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

Bewitched

The house from the classic TV series “Bewitched” could be found at the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California.  The ranch was a small lot located apart from the main studio lot and was not open to the public.  However, the design of this house is actually based on a real home, located at 267 18th St, Santa Monica, CA 90402, with the layout simply reversed for the ranch set.  While the Santa Monica home was never used on screen, it’s the closest version visible to the public.  The house set at the Warner Bros. Ranch was also used in the TV series “Gidget” and “The Geena Davis Show.” The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

The tower where the woman falls to her death in the opening of the 1987’s “Lethal Weapon” was filmed at the International Tower Condos in Long Beach, California.

Roger Murtaugh, played by Danny Glover, shows up in front of the same tower to investigate.  The Villa Riviera condos can be seen in the distance.

Murtaugh’s house, seen in much of the film, was not a real house.  It was a set on the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California.  The ranch was offsite from the main Warner Studio lot and not available for public tours.  The house had been used in countless productions, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “American Beauty,” “Hook, Line and Sinker,” “WandaVision” and many, many more.  It had the most complete interiors of any set on the ranch, much of which was seen in the film. The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space.

The building where Martin Riggs, played by Mel Gibson, uses his unique methods to neutralize a potential suicide jumper was filmed at the Emser Tile building in West Hollywood.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

For the 1989 sequel “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” most of the story is set in Chicago, Illinois, but production took place primarily in Burbank, California, with a few exteriors filmed in Chicago and Colorado.  The Griswold house was not a real house, rather a set on the Warner Bros. Ranch.  The ranch was located separate from the main Warner Bros. Studio lot and not open to public tours.  The entire ranch was demolished in 2023, with sound stages taking over the space. The same house could be seen in “American Beauty,” “WandaVision,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Small Soldiers,” “Pleasantville” and more.

Just next to the Griswold house was the house of Todd and Margo, played by Nicholas Guest and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.  It too was a set, but of all the houses on the ranch, it had the most functional interior, having been used in many productions.  The house was mostly shown from side angles or close-ups, likely due to having been used in another popular film series at that time, such as “Lethal Weapon,” where it served as Danny Glover’s house.  Known as the Lindsay house, it has also appeared in “American Beauty,” “WandaVision,” The Three Stooges serials, “Pushing Daisies,” “The Middle” and many more. It too has since been demolished.

Clark flirts with an attractive woman working at a department store, before his son busts him.  This was filmed at Bullocks Wilshire, a famous art deco building on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.  Once a luxury department store, the building now operates as a law school.  The building is only seen from interior views in the film.  While the inside is typically closed to the public, there are occasional public tour opportunities.  The building has also been seen in the films “Mank,” “The Aviator,” “The Public Enemy” and “Dunston Checks In,” the TV series “Moonlighting” and Areosmith’s music video for “Love in an Elevator,” as well many other productions.

Later in the film, Clark fantasizes about the same department store woman, undressing at a pool in his back yard.  The pool was also located at the Warner Bros Ranch.  While located fairly close to the Griswold house, it was actually on the opposite side of the street (known as Blondie St), not in back of the house as depicted in the film.  If not for the trees in the background of the photo below, you could see the Griswold house in the distance. This area has likewise since been demolished.

Near the end of the film, Cousin Eddie, played by Randy Quaid, abducts Clark’s boss from his home after he stiffs his staff on their Christmas bonuses.  This was filmed at the Mattison Boyd Jones house in Glendale, California.  The house can be a bit tricky to see from the road, as the front of the property has a long fence with high shrubs and the driveway is gated.  However, from the right angle you can still catch a view.  Currently a private residence, the house has been seen in many television shows, primarily from the 70s and 80s, including “Flamingo Road,” “Columbo,” “Knight Rider” and “Emerald Point N.A.S.”
