Hereditary (2018)

The 2018 Ari Aster film “Hereditary” was shot in Utah. The Graham house can be found in Park City, within a gated community known as The Colony. The home is not visible from the gated entrance. Ski lifts run just behind the home. Only the exterior of this property was used in the film, the interiors were filmed at Utah Film Studios, which we’ll cover later in this article.

The tree house was built specifically for the film and dismantled after shooting was completed. We’ve included this wider shot of the surrounding area just to show that the tree house is no longer there.

The exterior of the school seen in the film is actually on the grounds of the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City. It is seen several times in the film, all near the Grand Building near 300 N. In one scene, Peter, played by Alex Wolff, sees Joan, played by Ann Dowd, across the street through fencing.

Also on the same grounds of the Utah State Fairpark is the support group building where Annie, played by Toni Collette, first meets Joan. This building is known as the Pioneer Building.

Here is a wider shot of the building. For those wondering, you can freely access the Utah State Fairpark. There is a DMV located near this building. This and the Grand Building seen in the film are fenced off, but both were open and accessible when we visited.

The accident at the telephone pole was filmed on Richardson Flat Rd in Heber City, located very close to Utah Film Studios. The telephone pole itself was added by the production, but here is the area where it was filmed.

The funeral scenes were filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy, with the picturesque mountains in the distance. The cemetery is not large and it is relatively easy to find this location once you’re on the grounds.

Annie visits Joan’s apartment, which can be found in Salt Lake City.

Annie leaves Joel’s Art Supplies and encounters Joan in the parking lot. These scenes were actually filmed at Utah Film Studios in Park City, where much of the interiors for the film were shot, including the Graham house.

The entire area is fenced off and there is a security gate to reach the area where the art supply exterior was filmed. When we visited, we were able to enter without issue, but your experience may differ from ours if you attempt to visit. Here is a wider view of the studios. The art supply exterior was toward the left side of the building from this view.

Steve, played by Gabriel Byne, nearly runs the light at this intersection, before hitting the brakes.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

Dan Gilroy’s 2019 thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw” is set in the Los Angeles art scene.  Morf, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, lives at this house, which would appear to be located in Hollywood, with the famous sign visible in the background. However, this was digitally added. The home, a famous architectural landmark known as the Case Study House, can actually be found in Altadena.

Josephina, played by Zawe Ashton, lives in this apartment building, located in Koreatown.

LOCATION: 620 S Ardmore Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90005

The offices of Rhodora Haze, played by Rene Russo, can be found in Downtown Los Angeles, near the Staples Center. The same location appears in the film “Malignant” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” as well as the TV show “Supergirl.”

Morf meets Josephina at the Colburn Cafe.  While the address is on S Grand Ave, it’s not visible from that street.  It’s actually located directly behind another location in the film; the “LAMA” museum, covered later in this article.  There are walkways on either side of the building from S Grand Ave to access this area.

Gretchen, played by Toni Collette, visits the LAMA museum, which is actually the Colburn School. Directly behind this building is the Colburn Cafe previously mentioned.

The art studio of Piers, played by John Malkovich is the H.D. Buttercup building in Downtown Los Angeles.

Bryson is transporting some art to storage when a fire starts inside his vehicle, causing him to crash in front of this gas station. The same building, which is not an active business, has been seen in many films, such as “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Family Plot,” as well as the television show “Quincy M.E.”

Rhodora and Josephina examine the wreckage of Bryson’s vehicle near the Arts District of Downtown L.A. This area is very popular for filming, with the bar exterior from “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” notably located at the end of the street.

Later in the film, Josephina has upgraded to a new apartment in Downtown L.A. Morf can briefly be seen exiting out front.

LOCATION: 1100 S Hope St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Josephina can be seen at a bar located at this building.  This exterior is just a few buildings away from the art studio of Piers.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The 2006 film “Little Miss Sunshine” was primarily filmed in Southern California. In the film, this hotel, supposedly located in Scottsdale, Arizona, is where Richard Hoover, played by Greg Kinnear, comes to confront Stan Grossman, played by Bryan Cranston. The real hotel is actually located in Valencia, California. The same hotel appeared in the films “Twilight” and “Magnolia” (interiors only), as well as numerous TV shows, including “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “CSI: New York,” “NCIS,” “Big Love,” “Las Vegas,” The Unit,” “Make It or Break It” and more.

This Volkswagen van was one of five used in the film.  It can be found on display at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California.
