Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)

Dan Gilroy’s 2019 thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw” is set in the Los Angeles art scene.  Morf, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, lives at this house, which would appear to be located in Hollywood, with the famous sign visible in the background. However, this was digitally added. The home, a famous architectural landmark known as the Case Study House, can actually be found in Altadena.

Morf meets Josephina at the Colburn Cafe.  While the address is on S Grand Ave, it’s not visible from that street.  It’s actually located directly behind another location in the film; the “LAMA” museum, covered later in this article.  There are walkways on either side of the building from S Grand Ave to access this area.

Gretchen, played by Toni Collette, visits the LAMA museum, which is actually the Colburn School. Directly behind this building is the Colburn Cafe previously mentioned.

Bryson is transporting some art to storage when a fire starts inside his vehicle, causing him to crash in front of this gas station. The same building, which is not an active business, has been seen in many films, such as “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Family Plot,” as well as the television show “Quincy M.E.”

LOCATION: 22124 Sierra Hwy, Sylmar, CA 91342

Rhodora and Josephina examine the wreckage of Bryson’s vehicle near the Arts District of Downtown L.A. This area is very popular for filming, with the bar exterior from “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” notably located at the end of the street.

LOCATION: 1326 Palmetto St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Later in the film, Josephina has upgraded to a new apartment in Downtown L.A. Morf can briefly be seen exiting out front.

LOCATION: 1100 S Hope St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Josephina can be seen at a bar located at this building.  This exterior is just a few buildings away from the art studio of Piers.

Baby Driver (2017)

Edgar Wright’s 2017 film “Baby Driver” was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia and the surrounding areas.  The opening shot of the bank was filmed at the Candler Building on Peachtree St in Atlanta.  However, the entrance seen in the film faces John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE.

Debora works at the former Uncle Chucky’s Diner in Forest Park, which has since closed.  The building currently sits vacant.  It can be tricky to access, as the address is on GA-85, but the restaurant actually sits bit further back from the road, with no direct entrance from GA-85.  Instead, you need to take a couple side roads to access it.

Duel (1971)

Steven Speilberg’s dazzling debut, the 1971 thriller “Duel,” was mostly filmed around the Santa Clarita and Acton areas of California.  David, played by Dennis Weaver, lives at this house in Toluca Lake, which has unfortunately since been heavily remodeled from how it appeared in the film.

LOCATION: 10414 Bloomfield St, Toluca Lake, CA 91602

As the film unravels, David unwillingly embarks on a terrifying cat and mouse game with a sadistic truck driver.  The film does a great job of making most of the locations look quite desolate, but in reality the majority are located pretty close to civilization.

David stops off at this distinct looking restaurant with a stone facade in Santa Clarita after an encounter with the mysterious truck driver.  The same restaurant was featured in the film “Wild At Heart” and the TV series “Sharp Objects.” Just a few buildings up the road is the motel from “Too Old To Die Young.”

If you’ve never seen the film, we encourage you to seek it out.  While the plot is pretty minimal, the execution stands the test of time and is so well done, it’s easy to see why Spielberg quickly made a name for himself.

Identity Thief (2013)

The 2013 comedy “Identity Thief,” starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, was filmed primarily in the Atlanta, Georgia area.  Late in the film, the two stay at The Georgian Terrace in Midtown Atlanta, which is seen mostly from interior views.  The hotel was also featured in another Jason Bateman film; 2011’s “The Change-Up.”  However, the building’s most well-known film connection is having hosted a gala following the 1939 premiere of “Gone with the Wind.”

The Girl Next Door (2004)

The houses from the 2004 comedy “The Girl Next Door” can be found in South Pasadena, California.  They are located side by side, as depicted in the film.  The house on the right is where Matthew, played by Emile Hirsch lived, while the one on the left belonged to Danielle, played by Elisha Cuthbert.  Both homes can be found on the same street as the “Beethoven” house.

Iron Man (2008)

The 2008 film “Iron Man” famously launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is regarded not only as one of the finest Marvel films, but one of the best superhero films ever made.  Early in the film, Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey, Jr., demonstrates his latest weapon, the “Jericho” missile.  Supposedly set in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan, these scenes were actually filmed at Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California.  Many classic western films have also filmed there over the years, along with more recent films, such as Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and “Gladiator.”

Tony’s iconic Malibu house doesn’t actually exist, it is rather a CGI creation.  However, the land where it’s located is very much real.  Point Dume in Malibu is a public park that is thankfully devoid of any homes.  Instead there is a foot trail and biking path which leads to a beautiful ocean view.  The closest actual home, located directly across the street, is the “Circles on the Point” mansion, another property frequently featured in film and television productions, such as “Color Of Night,” “Glow” and more.  The CGI design of the Stark home is rumored to have been inspired by another mansion; the The Razor House in La Jolla (9826 La Jolla Farms Rd, La Jolla, CA 92037), near San Diego.  The gated access and high cliff walls do not make for convenient photography of the Razor House, however.

More CGI trickery was used with the Stark Industries building.  The main building is the Masimo headquarters, formerly known as the Nikken Building, in Irvine.  However, the wider shot is a composite of other streets and buildings, including portions of Shoreline Drive in Long Beach.  The Masimo building has been used in many other productions, including “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” “You, Me And Dupree” and “All About Steve.”

Tony first conceives the Iron Man suit after he is captured by terrorists.  Once he escapes and builds the suit, he returns to do battle with the Gulmira terrorists.  The bombed out ruins where he makes short work of his enemies was actually a set located on the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch in Santa Clarita.  As is always the case with movie ranches, the sets are often changed around to meet the needs of the latest productions, but several portions of the Iron Man set still remain recognizable.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)

The opening of the 1998 comedy “There’s Something About Mary” famously begins with a guitarist and drummer sitting in a tree, singing the opening theme.  The tree, supposedly located in front of a high school in Rhode Island, can actually be found in Plantation, Florida.  The tree remains alive and well in front of the Plantation City Hall, albeit with a few less branches.

At the conclusion of the song, the camera then pans down to a young Ted, played by Ben Stiller.  He stands in this grass immediately to the right of the tree.  The same area is where Mary, played by Cameron Diaz, meets Ted after he breaks up a confrontation between Mary’s brother Warren and an angry jock.
