Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

The 2004 Michel Gondry film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” shot around many parts of New York, from New York City to Mauntauk, at the far end of Long Island, with some additional filming in New Jersey. The beach house Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, break into can be found in Wainscott in Long Island. The home is part of the Georgica Association, a private enclave of upscale houses. There is limited street parking nearby, but it requires permit ID. As for the beach itself, the house is perched on a small stretch that is privately owned by the Georgica Association beginning at Beach Lane. If you stop by outside of peak times and keep your visit brief, in our experiences, the neighborhood residents were accommodating, but your experience could differ from ours.

The house has also appeared in the film “The Nanny Diaries” as well as the music video for “Seasons Change” by Expose.

Later in the film, the house is seen collapsing as a visual representation of Joel’s memory being erased. This was of course a visual effect.

Clementine’s house was formerly located in Booklyn (59 Orient Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211), but has since been demolished.

Joel’s apartment can be found in Yonkers. He is seen walking along the sidewalk as Stan and Patrick, played by Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood, drive past.

Joel is seen turning into his apartment driveway here.

As Stan and Patrick perform the memory wipe, we see into Joel’s memories of an argument he had with Clementie as she approaches this corner.

Joel walks after Clementine past the Saratoga Market, but every time he reaches the end of the building, it looks the same as where he began, with Clementine now walking the opposite direction.

Here is a panoramic view of the full building where Joel walks back and forth, always ending up where he began, with the store signage going blank as his memories continue to be erased.

Midway through his memories of Clementine being erased, Joel decides he no longer wants to proceed and begins trying to hide her in unrelated memories from his life, in the hopes that he can prevent losing her altogether. They are seen running through New York City’s famed Grand Central Terminal, with people around them disappearing as Joel’s memories are zapped. The two run down these stairs. Grand Central Terminal has been seen in countless films, such as “Midnight Run,” “North By Northwest,” “Carlito’s Way,” “Seconds,” “The Fisher King,” “The Avengers,” “The Ice Storm,” “Unfaithful,” “Hackers,” “The French Connection,” “Armageddon,” “Revolutionary Road” and many more.

Joel’s childhood home could be found in Bayonne, New Jersey (105 E 23rd St, Bayonne, NJ 07002), but it has since been demolished.

The Holiday (2006)

The 2006 romantic comedy “The Holiday,” tells the story of two women, one from England, the other from Los Angeles, who decide to swap homes for a two week holiday. Production likewise took place around England and Los Angeles. Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz, owns this home, located in San Marino. Iris, played by Kate Winslet, takes residence here while on holiday.

The cottage where Iris lives was a set built on an empty field in England, which was demolished after filming.

Titanic (1997)

The classic 1997 James Cameron film “Titanic” was of course filmed primarily on a recreated set of the famous ship, which was built at Fox Baja Studios in Mexico.  In 2017, however, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California held a unique exhibition on the ship, where it combined real artifacts from the sunken ship alongside props and sets from the film.  It was the largest collection of artifacts from passengers of the ship since the fateful night it collided with an iceberg a century before.

The exhibit has unfortunately since closed, but here we’ll take a look at some of the props, costumes and sets from the film that were on display.

This is the set of the famous scene where Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, draws a nude Rose, played by Kate Winslet.

Here are some props from the scene, including Rose’s mirror, butterfly hairpin and comb, as well as her “Heart of the Ocean” necklace.

Here is Jack’s sketchbook and pencil case.  On top of the sketchbook is also the note Rose leaves for Cal, played by Billy Zane.  She places the note inside his safe, along with the necklace.  Her note reads, “Darling – Now you can keep us both locked up inside your safe.  Rose.”

This is the set of Jack and his friend Fabrizio’s cabin, designed for third class passengers.

Here is the Marconi Room, another set from the film, where the ship sent out it’s distress calls and communicated with other ships.  Without it, no one would’ve known why or where the ship had sunk.

Moving on to more props from the film, here is the clock and cherub from the grand staircase of the ship, where Jack greets Rose.

Some scale miniatures were also built for the film, including a 45 foot long model of the ship.  Here are some pieces from the miniature.

While the exhibit closed down in 2018, due to the enduring popularity of both the film and the history of the ship itself, these artifacts are bound to find their way into another, future exhibition.

We leave you with one last prop from the film, which was not part of the Reagan Library exhibit.  Rather, it can be found at Planet Hollywood in Florida.  It’s the piece of wood that Rose floats on at the end of the film.
