Ally McBeal

On the legal comedy-drama series “Ally McBeal,” which ran from 1997 until 2002, the lead character, played by Calista Flockheart, worked on the 7th floor at the fictional Boston law firm Cage And Fish.  The real building can be found in Boston, but it is actually home to the Congressional Library and Archives.

Benson

“Benson,” a spin-off of the television series “Soap,” about a butler becoming the Governor’s “Director of Household Affairs,” ran from 1979 until 1986.  The Governor’s house from the show can be found perched atop a hill in Pasadena, California and is much larger than you might expect.  The same house was featured on an episode of the TV series “GLOW,” as well as in the films “American Gigolo” and “Monster-In-Law.”

Pawn Stars

Just a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip, you’ll find the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, also known as the “Pawn Stars” shop from the hit TV series.  The shop is open 24 hours, with security always posted at the front entrance.  Depending on the level of business at a given time, the staff will sometimes form a line outside for visitors to enter if it becomes too crowded inside.

Melrose Place

In the early 1990s, in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Aaron Spelling’s production company introduced a second series into the 90210 universe, known as “Melrose Place.”  The show inhabited the same universe, with characters overlapping for special guest appearances.  The original series ran from 1992 to 1999.

The famous apartment building from the show was supposedly located at 4616 Melrose Place in Los Angeles.  It turned out the producers made just a minor change to the real apartment’s address, which is located at 4616 Greenwood Place, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.  The building is known as the El Pueblo Apartments.  There is also a real Melrose Place in West Hollywood, but you won’t find much there besides some commercial businesses on a short street.

As for the courtyard and interiors seen in the show, those were filmed on a sound stage.  There is no pool at the actual El Pueblo location and if you head past the front gates, you’ll quickly realize the rest of the building bears little resemblance to the show.

The Osbournes

In 2002, MTV found themselves a hit television show when they decided to start following the personal lives of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne and his family.  The show ran four seasons until 2005, filming inside the family’s Beverly Hills home.  Fans of the show are likely to be disappointed if they attempt to visit the actual house, however.  It is obscured by walls, gates and trees, making very little of the house visible to the public.  Here we offer what little can be seen.  The Osbournes have long since moved out.  The house later belonged to singer Christina Aguilera as well, who likewise has long since moved.

Mama’s Family

Several houses were used for the filming of the 1980s sitcom “Mama’s Family,” starring Vicki Lawrence.  In the first two seasons, the house seen in the establishing shots was actually located in Kansas City, Missouri (18 W 59th St, Kansas City, MO 64113).  However, for exterior shots where the cast was required to be on location, a second home was utilized in Pasadena, California, much closer to where the show taped.

However, the home most commonly associated with the series, used in seasons 3 through 6, as well as syndicated episodes, is this third house, located not far from the second, in South Pasadena, California.  The home is actually located just two doors down from the shrubs Michael Meyers famously stood at in the original “Halloween.”  The “Mama’s Family” house can even be seen in a couple shots in the film, if you look closely at the background.

The Golden Girls

The house from the TV sitcom “The Golden Girls” is unique for a couple reasons.  First, despite being off the air for over 25 years, the house still looks almost virtually identical to how it appeared on the show.  Secondly, a full scale replica was actually built in Florida on the backlot of the now-defunct Disney/MGM Studios.  While the replica has long since vanished, the original is still standing strong in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood, California.

My So-Called Life

The short-lived, but well remembered 90s TV drama “My So-Called Life,” where Claire Danes and Jared Leto got their starts, was set in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, as is the case with so many films and TV series, the house seen in the show was actually based in Southern California.  It can be found in South Pasadena.  The house was also used in Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of “Halloween.”

Step By Step

The 90s sitcom “Step By Step,” starring Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers, was a staple of the “TGIF” line-up, which also included “Full House,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Family Matters” and more.  While set in the town from Port Washington, Wisconsin, the house from the show can be found in South Pasadena, California.  It was of course only used as an exterior shot, with all interiors filmed on a studio stage.  Also, in case you’re wondering, the theme park from the opening credits is likewise in California, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia.
